Ford Ranger Oil Change Guide

The Ford Ranger is a popular mid-size pickup truck known for its durability and off-road capabilities. To ensure your Ford Ranger continues to perform at its best, regular oil changes are essential. In this guide, we will walk you through the steps involved in changing the oil in your Ford Ranger.

Step 1: Gather the necessary materials

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

  • Oil filter (compatible with your Ford Ranger model)
  • Engine oil (check your owner's manual for the recommended type and quantity)
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags or gloves for cleanup
  • Socket wrench set

Step 2: Locate the oil drain plug

Position the oil drain pan under the vehicle, then locate the oil drain plug. It is typically located on the bottom of the engine oil pan.

Step 3: Drain the old oil

Using the socket wrench, loosen the oil drain plug in a counterclockwise direction. Allow the old oil to completely drain into the pan. Once it has finished draining, securely tighten the oil drain plug back into place.

Step 4: Replace the oil filter

Locate the oil filter, which is usually on the side of the engine. Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old filter in a counterclockwise direction. Make sure to have the drain pan beneath it to catch any residual oil. Once the old filter is removed, apply a small amount of fresh oil to the rubber gasket of the new filter. Screw the new filter into place by hand and then give it an additional 3/4 turn.

Step 5: Add new oil

Locate the oil filler cap on the top of the engine, remove it, and set it aside. Place a funnel into the opening and pour in the recommended amount of fresh oil. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct oil capacity.

Step 6: Check the oil level

Once you have added the new oil, replace the oil filler cap and start the engine. Let it run for a few minutes, then turn off the engine and wait for a couple of minutes to allow the oil to settle. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again to check the oil level. Top up if necessary.

Step 7: Dispose of the old oil responsibly

It is crucial to dispose of the old oil in an environmentally friendly manner. Take the used oil to a recycling center, an auto shop, or a local disposal facility that accepts used motor oil. Do not dispose of it in the trash or pour it down the drain.

By following this oil change guide, you can keep your Ford Ranger's engine running smoothly and prolong its lifespan. Regular oil changes are key to maintaining optimal performance and fuel efficiency.
