So to address some of the frequent complaints, yes, a lot of the body of this machine is made from molded plastic. That being the hinge lid at the top for adding water, the swing basket for the coffee grounds, the lid for the espresso tank, and the turn dial on the side for the steam and espresso maker. All made from plastic, which indicates the need to use care with the machine. Knowing this, I've never broken anything on the machine.
Now some points to make, the turn dial for the steam/espresso maker feels cheap, and easy to break. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I'm always conscious of how delicate it feels to turn and have always expected it to break on me one day. I haven't however felt the same way about the swing basket for the coffee filter. It is plastic, but seems pretty sturdy to me and would require a certain amount of unnecessary force when using a coffee maker in order to somehow break it. The no.4 cone shape filters will stick out a bit at the top, and it helps to have the basket a little wet to stick the filter to the sides in order to keep it from folding over during brewing, but it isn't a big deal for me. I've never had the coffee filter get clogged as some have stated with their own machines.
The carafe is well made for both the coffee and espresso sides of the machine, so no worries there. I always hand clean them and haven't tried running them through the dishwasher though, as I'm not sure what that would do to them. (besides probably wash off the measurements on the side after a while)
The steam nozzle is also a bit too delicate feeling to my liking, but it hasn't busted on me yet so I can't complain. Now one thing in particular about this piece is it is a solid piece, no removable parts for cleaning. After a couple uses you come to realize the need to have a damp sponge handy beside the machine while using the steam nozzle to quickly wipe it clean after foaming milk as the residue will build up immediately and can be a pain to clean if left alone. Simple solution is to always keep it clean immediately following use. The steam is powerful, works fantastic to froth milk, I love it. I'll use 2% milk for extra foam, and had to buy a tamper for the espresso and a frothing pitcher for this side of the machine separately.
The brewing timer and heat plate work great and auto shuts off after two hours. The filter basket comes out of the machine easily for cleaning. The water chamber on the coffee side is easy to clean while the espresso side has a grate inside the pressure tank so you're unable to get inside it for cleaning, likely unnecessary anyway as I would think the high pressure steam would do a well enough job of that.
The coffee maker is tall for my counter, so I have to pull it forward to add water to the tanks, which isn't a big deal as the machine is light and easy to get to in my case.
Overall I am very satisfied with this product, it was a gift for my wife as she's the biggest coffee drinker in the house, and we both have made great use of the machine. It's really surprising to see so many people having issue with it. Like anything else it just requires care and it is a great, sturdy machine for the price that I paid. ( The current price is 3 times more than what I paid at the time, I have no explanation as to why its' so much now)
Update - after 3 years of use the buttons started failing in the control panel. We used this every single day, sometimes more than once, so while unfortunate I'm not going to complain. While I'll replace this with a machine designed specifically for cappuccinos over another duel-use, this was a great coffee maker while we had it.
I raised up the rating from 3 to 4 stars, because after two years, we still haven't ditched this coffeemaker. I have a mixed-gen household: my dad makes his regular, plain cup o' joe, and when I feel like it, I make a caffè latte. It has made coffee for us and our guests. I can make caffè lates, but it is harder to do for multiple people, which for me doesn't happen enough.
**two year update**
Finally after two years, I have to look up the manual to look up how to clean the nozzle. The instructions made it seem like there are two parts to the nozzle, but it's just one piece. I didn't see any threads like described in the instructions. FYI: To take out the nozzle, remove the lock washer and then it slips out.
Apparently, I'm supposed to remove this nozzle after every use? Or pour water in after the pressure has gone away? That's a lot of work I'll probably not do. To open it under pressure, which you shouldn't do, I use a towel to protect my hand and open it just a bit to release pressure from the top. Not smart, smart, who knows.
Liquid water doesn't leak anywhere, but steam does leak from the coffee side of the machine, mainly because the filter holder doesn't close, because it's warped from the steam.
Although the instructions were flawed - the tip of the nozzle is continuous with the nozzle tube and there isn't any screwing or thread-stripping going on - I did appreciate that I could understand everything clearly. So honestly, when I do buy a new coffeemaker, I'm going to look for a company branding itself as an "English-speaking" company. Whoever said the instructions were written in bad English must have a PhD in English, and they're going extinct anyway.
***7 month UPDATE***
Since the gift is for my dad, I personally don't use it regularly. I did make espressos for family and friends during Christmas. My friend said that I should make the milk first so the espresso doesn't get cold and bitter while steaming the milk. So in order to do that, I have been adding water for steaming, then after steaming, I add the water for making espresso, which means I have to open the water cap that warns not to be opened under pressure...so I have to carefully release the pressure and open the cap with a towel to prevent 1st degree burns. My espresso is hotter though which is nice.
I still do not like knowing how much water is in the back for both the espresso side and the coffee side. Our other coffee maker was less accurate as it got older, so it would be nice to know how much water is actually in the machine.
My dad's complaint is that compared to the old coffee maker, the water does not get as hot, and the coffee is less fragrant when it is being made.
**original 3 day review**
I have had the coffee maker for about 3 days. So far it has been easy to use. Some other customer's review implied the instructions were poorly written in bad English, but for the sections I have read, they seemed normal. Not only that, I have had a Krups coffee maker in college and I never had a problem with it.
The espresso machine and coffee machine has been easy to use.
