PRO - Surprizingly heavy, solid feel, metal grille
- Easy hookup with XP OS - true Plug & Play
- Sound range excellent for desktop (used in basement and provides plenty of volume for casual listening)
- Decent base, as good as can be expected for the price (excellent value) - I have an older altec-lansing speaker set that delivers better bass, but lacks the mid-range presence of the GOgroove unit. Considering the 4x price difference I consider the GOgroove the better value by far.
CON - Volume control a bit scratchy and non-linear at very low volume (below any normal listening level). A mute button, or at least a smooth "off" detent, would be nice. This is a minor annoyance, but still valid since I have cause to frequently adjust volume.
- Though it would add a little cost, some kind of grill over the bass bellows would be nice. I have frequently grabbed the speaker by the bellows and am afraid of damaging them. I think I've learned now, but ???
OVERALL - This is the best low priced computer speaker set I have experienced. Sound is the main thing and it is excellent on the GOgroove SonaWAVE O2 for the price. I would recommend it to anyone.
Also, my HDTV has a powered USB connection, so I tried plugging in the GOgroove, speakers and voila: much-improved TV sound on a budget. I think it sounds best when I use both sound sources together, the TV built-in speakers and the GOgroove speakers. (Unfortunately the TV volume, mute, and sound mode controls don't affect the sound from the GOgroove speakers, but I suppose that could vary depending on the TV. Mine is a Samsung UN32D4000.)
Here are some things you might want to know about these speakers:
The wires measure 4 feet (right speaker to source) and 3 feet (right speaker to left speaker)
The wires are permanently connected to the speakers.
Each speaker enclosure has two passive woofers, one on each side of the box.
There is no indication of which speaker is left or right side.
There is no on/off switch but fortunately the volume control can take the speakers all the way down to zero sound.
There is no power indicator light.
The enclosures are basically smooth, no hooks or holes for wall mounting.
The USB connection is for power only and there is a separate 3.5mm audio plug.
The USB and audio plugs can be separated up to about 16 inches if you pull the wires apart.
The volume control seems backwards to me: downward motion increases volume.
Some reviews complain about a "continuous hum" when the speakers are on, but I think they're quiet enough. I don't notice any background noise unless I really try to hear it.
The exposed woofers seem like they could be fragile, so I wouldn't want to use these speakers for a portable application.
If needed, you can buy a USB Wall Adapter to allow plugging these into a wall socket.
The speakers are made in China.
My criteria:
--Audio quality. I wasn't expecting surround sound, just to sound as good as a TV.
--Cheap. I wanted to spend less than $100. Although I dismissed speakers cheaper than $20, because I was worried they'd be no good.
--Small. Wanted to easily place them on the sides of my laptop. I decided to go for just two speakers, and discarded any speakers that had a separate, big subwoofer.
I hesitated to buy GOgroove, because I wasn't familiar with the brand. Actually, I came very close to getting the Altec Lansing BXR1220 2-Piece Desktop Speaker System, because I know Altec Lansing has a good reputation for audio.
In the end, the good reviews of the Gogroove convinced me to buy (and they looked cooler). Especially the reviewers who said these speakers worked well in classrooms for presentations. If the speakers are loud enough for that, they should fulfill my more modest needs.
When I got the O2i speakers, I was excited to try them out. I plugged them in and immediately went on YouTube to watch some movie trailers for big-budget action movies. My favorite way to test out speakers.
The GOgroove speakers are great! Loud, full-sounding, and clear. As a bonus, they're very detailed; I can hear little things in the audio tracks that create the atmosphere and mood a movie is trying to evoke. Music sounds awesome as well. There's no distortion unless you crank up the volume really high, and by that point it's too loud anyway for most ears. I was in a second-floor bedroom with windows, facing the backyard. My parents sitting out in the backyard below said they could hear the movie trailers I was watching! The O2i's are that powerful.
There is decent bass to sound full and catch the low end, but not enough to rumble the room. The black circles on the sides of the speakers are for the passive subwoofers. You can touch them and feel the vibrations. Anyway, the O2i speakers are perfect for watching movies and TV shows on your computer.
As long as you have reasonable expectations and don't expect these to be a surround-sound home theater system, I think you'll be satisfied too.
Other thoughts:
--The volume control is weird, as other reviewers noted. The dial is on the back of the right speaker. You have to rotate it down to make the volume go up. I usually have it rolled down to the max, and mainly control the volume through my computer's settings. I usually put the it between 20% to 50%.
--The two speakers are wired together, and you cannot unplug the wires. The wire that connects the speakers is also partly covered with a white paint, kinda gross, but I'm too lazy to scrape it off.
I wouldn't travel around with these, for fear of damaging the wires. However, there is a GOgroove SonaVERSE USB Clip On Soundbar. If it's nearly as good as these O2i speakers, I'd look into that if you want speakers for travel.
--There's no headphone jack. Not a problem, since I got these to avoid wearing headphones.
--There's another version of these same speakers, the GOgroove SonaVERSE O2. They look the same with fewer features than the O2i.
The only differences: they're gray instead of white like these ones, don't have the O2i's blue indicator lights (I keep them turned off because they're distracting). I went with the O2i since I thought the white speakers went better with my MacBook Pro.
--There are two plugs: one USB plug to draw power, and an audio plug that goes into your computer's headphone jack to get the audio data.
--If you want to use these with your smartphone, I think you still need to have the speakers plugged into your computer for power, or get a USB wall adapter and plug it into a wall outlet. Then plug the audio cable into your phone. A little cumbersome, might be better to get Bluetooth speakers like the Ultimate Ears MINI BOOM if you want speakers for your phone. The O2i is for computers.
--These are USB speakers, so by using them, you'll lose one USB port. The MacBook doesn't have many USB ports. So when I got the GOgroove, I also bought the Sabrent Premium 4 Port Aluminum USB 3.0. This USB hub will give your computer four more USB ports for any other accessories you want to plug in.
I'd advise getting a USB hub, useful for things like if you want play movies from an external hard drive. Maybe you'll want to use the speakers along with a webcam for video-chatting. I'm excited to try these out with Skype or Google Hangouts. I'm betting the O2i will make my friends will sound like they're in the room with me.
--There are multiple sellers for these speakers. I got them from Beach Audio, which has a good reputation and many more reviews than other sellers (over 150,000 at the time I write this). When you're on the main product page, look at the right side for "Other Sellers on Amazon." You'll see an entry for Beach Audio. Shipping was fast and efficient, and the item was intact.
However, the only shipping option was a 1-3 day expedited shipping that cost $34.77 . Combined with the price of the speakers ($29.99), it more than doubled the cost to $64.76. I was a bit annoyed about that, but it was nice to get the speakers sooner. You may want to go with another seller to save on shipping. But I was more concerned about dealing with a reliable vendor, so I just accepted the expense. I'm wary of most non-Amazon sellers.
This has made me a new fan of the GOgroove brand. For a step up in quality, there's the GOgroove BassPULSE 2.1 Stereo Speaker Sound System with Powered Subwoofer. I don't want to deal with a subwoofer right now, but I'll keep that in mind for later. Overall, I'm happy with the O2i speakers and plan to get a lot of use out of them.
