Why are the curtains opened on the windows during takeoff and landing on airplanes?

I noticed that on planes, especially during take-off and landing, the stewardesses check them one by one and if the curtains are closed on the window, they open them. Does anyone know why?

Why are the curtains opened on the windows during takeoff and landing on airplanes?

When it comes to air travel, there are several safety procedures and protocols in place to ensure the well-being of passengers. One common practice that can be observed during takeoff and landing is the opening of curtains or window shades on the aircraft windows. This may seem like a simple routine, but it serves important purposes for both passengers and crew members.

1. Passenger Awareness

Opening the curtains or window shades allows passengers to see outside during critical phases of flight. Takeoff and landing are considered the most critical stages due to their proximity to the ground and the potential for emergencies. By keeping the windows uncovered, passengers have a visual reference of their surroundings, providing them with an increased sense of awareness. This allows them to quickly assess their surroundings and locate emergency exits in the event of an evacuation.

2. Natural Light

Another reason for opening the curtains or window shades is to make use of natural light during daytime flights. The cabin lighting is often dimmed during takeoff and landing to help passengers' eyes adjust to potential low-light situations. By allowing natural light to enter the cabin, it helps maintain a certain level of visibility, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting sources. This can have an impact on the passengers' comfort and ease of evacuation, particularly in emergency situations where the power supply may be compromised.

3. Observation by Crew Members

For crew members, having the curtains opened allows them to easily observe the external conditions during takeoff and landing. This includes monitoring the position of the aircraft relative to the runway, checking for any obstacles, and ensuring that everything is functioning as it should. It enables the crew to quickly identify any potential issues or abnormalities and take necessary actions if required, ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

4. Psychological Comfort

Lastly, the act of opening the curtains or window shades can have a positive psychological effect on passengers. Being able to see outside and witness the aircraft's movement can help alleviate anxiety or claustrophobia, especially for nervous flyers. Seeing the aircraft ascend or descend and observing the changing scenery can provide a sense of reassurance and make the flying experience more enjoyable.

In conclusion, opening the curtains or window shades during takeoff and landing on airplanes serves various purposes related to passenger safety, comfort, and crew vigilance. It promotes passenger awareness, makes use of natural light, allows crew members to monitor external conditions, and provides psychological comfort. By following these practices, airlines aim to enhance the overall flying experience and ensure a safe journey for everyone on board.

Why are the curtains opened on the windows during takeoff and landing on airplanes?

When you board an airplane and take your seat, one of the instructions you might hear from the flight attendants is to open the window curtains during takeoff and landing. While it may seem like a simple routine, there are several reasons behind this practice.

Aesthetics and Emotional Comfort

One of the primary reasons for opening the curtains is to provide an open and well-lit ambiance inside the aircraft cabin. By allowing natural light to enter the cabin, it prevents the space from feeling cramped or suffocating, especially during takeoff and landing when passengers might experience anxiety or discomfort.

Emergency Preparedness

In an unlikely event of an emergency during takeoff or landing, having the curtains open allows passengers, crew members, and emergency responders outside the aircraft to assess the situation inside quickly. It helps them gauge the level of urgency and determine the best course of action to ensure everyone's safety.

External Visual Reference

Opening the curtains allows passengers to look outside the aircraft window during takeoff and landing. This serves as a visual reference point, allowing them to see the ground, runway, or any nearby objects. In the rare instance of an aborted takeoff or an issue during landing, having a clear external visual reference helps passengers understand and follow the instructions given by the flight crew.

Balance and Safety

During takeoff and landing, the weight distribution of the aircraft is crucial. By keeping the curtains open, flight crew members can ensure that passengers are seated and properly positioned, maintaining the necessary balance. Additionally, in case of abrupt movements or necessary evacuations, open curtains can assist crew members in identifying any potential hazards or obstacles that might hinder passenger safety.

Cabin Crew Visibility

By opening the window curtains, the cabin crew can easily see the passengers and monitor any signs of distress or discomfort. This allows them to promptly address any concerns and provide assistance if needed, contributing to a smoother and more enjoyable flight experience for everyone onboard.

Regulatory Requirements

Lastly, certain aviation regulations and guidelines may require the window curtains to be opened during takeoff and landing. These regulations are put in place to ensure consistency, standardization, and adherence to safety protocols across different airlines and aircraft.

Next time you step onto an airplane and hear the instructions to open the window curtains during takeoff and landing, you now know the multitude of reasons behind this seemingly simple action. From aesthetics and safety to emergency preparedness and regulatory compliance, opening the curtains is an essential part of ensuring a safe, comfortable, and efficient flight experience for all passengers.
