Here you'll find everything you need to know about using detergent in your washer.
What kind of detergent should I use?
You should always use HE detergent. Every Samsung washer requires it. Using anything other than HE, even once, will cause problems with your washer, and you'll have to run several empty cycles to clean it out again.
Now for the next question: Powder or liquid? The cleaning performance between the two is basically the same.
Powder can be a little cheaper, but harder to dissolve in cold water. Liquid can be used to pretreat stains, but is easier to over pour and use too much.
As for which brand to get, that's up to you. We recommend to shop smart, look at reviews, and try to find one that fits your needs. Your washer will be happy to work with whatever brand of HE detergent you pick.
But if the cleaning performance isn't up to your standards, consider switching detergent.

How much detergent should I use?

Enough to get the job done and not a drop more. This is going to require a bit of trial and error to find the sweet spot. Always measure out exactly how much you're putting in never eyeball it. Most detergent comes with a cup or even the cap of the bottle to measure with. (You can even toss some measuring cups in with your clothes to get them clean.)

Detergent manufacturers give you a recommendation for the amount to use for the size of the load you're washing, and that's a great starting point. But then you'll want to try using less, and less, until you reach the minimum amount necessary for your clothes to come out just as clean as they did when you used more detergent. Not only will this save money by making your bottle of detergent last longer, but it prevents all that extra detergent from building up in your washer and causing issues.

Hopefully this shows that less is more. Throwing more detergent at your clothes won't actually get them any cleaner, and is just a waste: a waste that can cause issues with your washer and actually result in stains on your clothes. If you can't seem to find that sweet spot with the detergent you're using, and clothes just won't come out as clean as you like, switch detergent, don't just add more of it.

Note: Going over the MAX line in the detergent drawer will stain or damage your clothes or washer. Detergents come in different concentrations if the amount you would need to add would exceed the MAX line, you should reduce the size of your load or use a more concentrated detergent.

How do I use detergent pods?

For the most part we don't recommend these. Two reasons: One, you don't get the precision of measuring out exactly how much detergent you're using so you can maximize efficiency and reduce or eliminate detergent residue. And two, they can be a safety hazard for homes with young children or adults with dementia.

If you do use pods though, just toss them in the tub. Definitely don't put them in the detergent drawer. Also, for top loaders, you'll want to toss them in before the laundry so the pods are on bottom, under the clothes.

How do I get my clothes cleaner?

There's more to getting cleaner clothes out of your washer than just the detergent you use.

Sorting
The first thing you'll need to do, and it's kind of a groaner, is sort your clothes. It really does make a difference. All our clothes have those tags we like to ignore that tell us exactly how to wash them. It's time for us to stop ignoring them Following the fabric care instructions is the best way to clean our clothes and make them last longer.

By sorting your clothes based off their tag information, you can bundle them up and wash a batch of clothing that all need the same cycle and temperature setting. Then do another load, with its own cycle and temperature setting. Then the next, then the next. This way, all of your clothes come out looking their best. That's why your washer has so many cycle options

Pre-soaking
Another thing that helps is pretreating. Applying some detergent directly to the stain or even presoaking it with a little detergent can help get rid of tough stains. Oh, and make sure you're using something designed for stain removal that's color safe. Many of our models come with presoak options, and some top load models even have an Activewash sink to help with this.

Loading
Finally, make sure you're using a proper load size. Yeah, many of our models are huge and can take a lot of clothing, but every washer has a point where it's just too much to run in one cycle. Since you're sorting your clothes anyway (right?) this is easier to handle. Also be sure that you're adjusting your detergent usage to the size of each load you run if your load is a lot smaller than usual, your detergent amount should reflect that.
