technician - Thursday, June 13, 2019 535Fill any nail holes or dents in the wall with spackling compound, smoothing it with a putty knife. Allow the repaired areas to dry, then smooth them with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove any dust.
Mask or protect any surfaces next to the walls with painters tape. This includes the ceiling, windows, door frames, baseboards and any other trim. Use a sturdy stepladder to reach the high places.
Open the paint and pour some into a paint tray. Dip a medium paintbrush into the paint until the bottom half of the bristles are coated. Allow the excess paint to drip back into the paint tray before you take the brush to the wall. Starting at the top of the wall, paint a 2- to 3-inch strip next to the painters tape.
Slightly dampen a paint roller. Glide the roller over the surface of the paint in the tray, then pull it backward along the trays grate. You want to evenly distribute paint on the roller as well as remove any excess paint. The roller should be fully saturated but not dripping when you take it to the wall.
Start painting next to one of the corners. Release most of the paint by painting a zigzag shape about 3 feet wide. Roll the roller with up-and-down strokes over the paint.
Allow the paint to dry. Apply a second coat if the first did not completely cover the old color, then allow the walls to dry again.

On the ceiling, cut in first.
To paint the edges, or cut in, dip a brush about a third of the way into the paint and don't scrape it against the sides.
Step 2
Holding the brush as you would a pencil, paint with smooth strokes, feathering out the edges to prevent runs. Getting a little bit of paint on the trim wont matter since youre painting that later, but try not to be super messy.
Step 3
On the ceiling, cut in first along the ceiling line. Then switch to the roller.
For the walls, cut in one wall at time then switch to the roller. Painting can be a lot easier with two people. One person can cut while the other uses the roller.
Rolling On Ceiling/Walls:
Use a roller grid with a bucket.
If youre using a 5-gallon bucket, insert a roller grid. For pans, use a liner for easy cleanup.
Dampen the roller cover with a wet rag.
Load the roller with paint. To help the paint load, first dampen the roller cover with a wet rag. Dip just a little ways into the paint and roll onto the grid or liner a few times to even it out. Resist the urge to submerge the roller - itll make a mess.
Roll the paint in a zig-zag pattern.
Starting a few inches away from the edge, roll the paint on the ceiling/wall in a zig-zag pattern. Overlap your lines and go slow to avoid paint spatter. Dont press and squeeze the roller against the wall to get more paint out of itjust reload.
Work in 4-foot sections. For walls, work at the top, then the bottom.
Turn the roller sideways.
Once you get some paint on the walls you can go back along the edges. Turn the roller sideways to get really close to the ceiling and baseboards.
Lightly roll from ceiling to the floor.
To remove buildup and runs, lightly roll over the painted area from the ceiling down to the floor. Apply very little pressure. Paint one wall at a time. Apply two coats.

Lay down a drop sheet and clean your walls with sugar soap. You may be tempted to skip this step, however a clean surface is your best insurance against a ruined paint job.
Mask your trim for cutting-in. Cutting-in is a technique whereby you paint with a brush or application pad, the areas that cant be reached with a roller.
Load your brush by dipping it into the paint roughly half the length of the bristles. Tap the brush on the side of the paint pot to remove the excess. Start brushing a few centimeters from the corner or edge. As you move the brush, you will establish the line of the edge of the paint.
Start from where you cut in and roll across the wall. For best results, roll as far into the brushed area as possible.
After you have covered a section of the wall, its time to lay-off to get a smooth finish. This is arguably the most important step in rolling a wall and should be done when youve painted a section roughly 3-4 meters. Laying-off your wall means giving it a smooth consistent finish and hiding those streaky brush strokes. Simply place your unloaded roller at the top left corner of your wall. Ensure the handle side of your roller is to the right. Then with almost zero pressure roll straight down your wall until you reach the bottom. Remove your roller, return to the top, and slightly overlap where you just rolled so that each panel rubs away the line from the previous lay-off.
